Requests for permissions

This page enables administrators to handle requests for permissions on the English Wikipedia. Administrators are able to modify account creator, autopatrolled, confirmed, file mover, extended confirmed, mass message sender, new page reviewer, page mover, pending changes reviewer, rollback, template editor rights and AutoWikiBrowser access.

Editors wishing to request a permission flag here should do so following the procedure below. Editors requesting permissions are advised to periodically revisit the requests page, as notifications will not always be given after a decision is made. Editors should not expect their request to be answered right away and should remember to be patient when filing a request. To find out what permissions your account has, go to Special:Preferences, where your permissions are listed in the user profile tab under "Member of groups".

Requests for permissions are archived regularly; please see Wikipedia:Requests for permissions/Archive for an index of past requests.

User groups

  • Account creator (add requestview requests): The account creator flag is granted to users who are active in the request an account process. The flag removes the limit on the maximum number of new accounts that can be created in a 24 hour period. It also allows users to make accounts with names similar to other accounts. The account creator flag is only given to users who participate in the ACC process and may be removed without notice should a user's participation in the account creation process cease.
  • Autopatrolled (add requestview requests): The autopatrolled flag is granted to users who are active in the creation of new articles. This tool is granted so their creations are auto patrolled in Special:NewPages. Unlike other requests, any user may nominate an editor for Autopatrolled, even without that user's consent. A user who wishes to have this flag generally should have created at least 25 articles and must be trusted, experienced, and must have demonstrated they are familiar with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines, especially WP:BLP and Wikipedia:Notability.
  • AutoWikiBrowser (add requestview requests): AutoWikiBrowser is a semi-automated MediaWiki editor for Microsoft Windows, designed to make tedious repetitive tasks quicker and easier. It is essentially a browser that automatically opens up a new page when the last is saved. When set to do so, it suggests some changes (typically formatting) that are generally meant to be incidental to the main change. Please read the quick guide on the main page before requesting permission. This is not a true user right, but access needs to be granted by administrators just like other permissions. If approved, your name will be added to the CheckPage. Users with under 250 non-automated mainspace edits or 500 total mainspace edits are rarely approved. You will need to give a reason for wanting AWB access.
  • Confirmed (add requestview requests): The confirmed flag may be granted to new users who have not yet hit the threshold for autoconfirmed status. These are users who have not had both 10 edits and 4 days experience. People with this flag can upload files and edit semi-protected pages before hitting the autoconfirmed flag. Users requesting this flag must indicate clearly why they should be exempted from the customary confirmation period.
  • Event coordinator (add requestview requests): The event coordinator user right allows editors to create multiple new accounts, and to temporarily confirm accounts so that they can create new articles.
  • Extended confirmed (add requestview requests): The extended confirmed flag is normally automatically added to accounts after 500 edits and 30 days, but may be added to legitimate alternate accounts of users that already have this access. The flag allows users to edit pages under extended confirmed protection.
  • File mover (add requestview requests): The file mover user right is intended to allow users experienced in working with files to rename them, subject to policy, with the ease that autoconfirmed users already enjoy when renaming Wikipedia articles.
  • Mass message sender (add requestview requests): Mass message sender enables users to send messages to multiple users at once. This flag is given to users who have made requests for delivery in the past, clearly showing an understanding of the guidance for use.
  • New page reviewer (add requestview requests): The new page reviewer user right allows users to mark pages as patrolled and use the page curation toolbar. At administrators' discretion, the right may be accorded on a time limited basis or indefinite.
  • Page mover (add requestview requests): The page mover user right allows users experienced in working with article names to move them, subject to policy, without leaving behind a redirect. They may also move all subpages when moving the parent page(s). General guidelines include making 3,000 edits and 6 months of editing history. At administrators' discretion, the right may be accorded on a time limited basis or indefinite.
  • Pending changes reviewer (add requestview requests): The reviewer flag is granted to users who are experienced enough with Wikipedia editing and its policies for contributing to the process of reviewing articles placed under pending changes.
  • Rollback (add requestview requests): Rollback enables users to remove vandalism much more quickly and efficiently than by undoing it. Users who do not demonstrate an understanding of what constitutes capable vandalism fighting, either because they have no or little history of doing so, or show a poor ability to discern between good and bad faith edits will not be granted this right. Also, it is unlikely that editors with under 200 mainspace edits will have their request granted. For a more detailed explanation of rollback and information about when it is appropriate to use the tool, see Wikipedia:Rollback. For information about the technical details of the feature, see here.
  • Template editor (add requestview requests): The template editor flag allows users to edit protected templates and Lua modules. General guidelines for granting include making at least 1,000 edits overall (with at least 150 to templates or modules), being a registered user for over a year, and having a record of successfully proposing significant edits to several protected templates. Users should demonstrate proficiency with template syntax and an understanding of the need for caution when editing heavily-used templates.

Handled elsewhere

Several permissions are requested and handled elsewhere:

Removal of permissions

If you wish to have any of your permission flags (except administrator) removed, you should contact an administrator. If you want your administrator flag removed, you should contact a bureaucrat.

This is not the place to request review of another user's rights. If you believe someone's actions merit removal of a permission flag, you should raise your concern at the incidents noticeboard.

The bureaucrat, checkuser, and oversight flags are removed at meta:Steward requests/Permissions. Stewards will typically not carry out such requests unless they are made on behalf of the Arbitration Committee, by a user who is requesting their own access be removed, or in cases of an emergency.

To make a request for a permission, click "add request" next to the appropriate header and fill in the reason for wanting permission.

Any editor may comment on requests for permission.

Administrators are permitted to grant account creator, autopatrolled, confirmed, event coordinator, file mover, mass message sender, page mover, pending changes reviewer, rollback and template editor flags to any user who meets the criteria explained above and can be trusted not to abuse the tool(s). Administrators may either grant these permissions permanently or temporarily. For convenience, a bot will automatically comment with relevant data if the user does not meet configurable qualifications. Even if the bot does not comment, administrators should review the user's contributions and logs to ensure the tools will be used appropriately and check for any indication of potential misuse.

Once an administrator has granted a permission or decided to deny a request, they should add {{done}} or {{not done}} respectively under the request with their comments. If a user already has the requested permission, or is autoconfirmed and requesting confirmed, {{already done}} should be used. N hours after the last comment was made (as specified by the config), the request will be archived automatically: approved requests will be placed here; declined requests will go here. See User:MusikBot/PermClerk#Archiving for more information on archiving functionality.

I was recommended top priority to request this by an user. According to my edit counter I have created at least 60 pages on Wikipedia. Jhenderson 777 17:17, 20 November 2020 (UTC) Jhenderson 777 17:17, 20 November 2020 (UTC)

I created a lot of new articles, many of them related to the Roman Catholic Diocese of Mostar-Duvno. I tend to create many more articles on the subject, and do more articles related to the Catholic Church in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Catholic Church in Croatia. These will include hundreds of new articles, major modifications on already existing articles and so on. I've already worked on Paškal Buconjić and have largelly improved other articles unrelated to this topic (Sheng Shicai, Mahmut Muhiti etc.). I've made many minor edits on these articles, that included minor fixes or improvements I later saw as more fitting. Since I'll be working on so many articles at once, I'd like to use a simpler method to implement minor improvements to them all instead by visiting one by one. --Governor Sheng (talk) 12:35, 23 November 2020 (UTC)

I've been editing Wikipedia since September 2007. I wanted to do a mass typo correction of Adbul to Abdul, an error that occurs about 60 times, and I hope JWB will help me to do this. SamuelTheGhost (talk) 15:26, 22 November 2020 (UTC)

I do a lot of small changes/fixes on articles, mostly about villages in Azerbaijan (which there are thousands of), so AWB would help me a lot to make tiny changes/fixes on a lot of articles easily. — CuriousGolden (T·C) 17:55, 25 November 2020 (UTC)

Dear wikipedia administration,

i am currently creating a wikipedia page for my video game Anime Play Life: Unlimited which i cannot add a representation graphic at the moment, because i don't have the permission to do so. Therefore I would like to ask that my account be assigned these rights.

Best regards,

Not done – If the file you want to upload is available under a free license, it should be uploaded to our free media repository, Commons. You do not need any special permissions to upload there, and you can use the same username and password you use here. If it is not available under a free license, it should be requested using the Files for upload process, which does not require any special permissions. stwalkerster (talk) 20:36, 25 November 2020 (UTC)

Event coordinator

Hello, I would like to apply for an Event Coordinator permission so that I am able to autoconfirm a few groups of medical students for 10 days. They are improving 16 medical articles, supervised by Faculty Members (subject experts). I will be moderating all edits to ensure that they are appropriate for Wikipedia and following WP:MEDRS and WP:MEDMOS. This is the 4th fall that I have organized this same class. Our dashboard is here, however I do not need to auto-confirm all the students, only those who are editing a semi-protected article. Concussion is one example. Time frame needed: Nov 23 (if possible) to Dec 10th 2020. I am sorry for the last minute request. I did not realize that my previous status had expired! Thank you for your help! Hello, I occasionally patrol recent changes and at times encounter pages with pending changes, where many constructive edits seem to go un-reviewed for fairly long periods of time. I understand the role of a pending changes reviewer, but do not have anything to proof my ability on this role since I didn' review, but would like to do that, I only did edits by my own in the past, I have 2,567 edits since 2006, I have some experience in Wikipedia editing, including 7 new pages, and I have also substantially contributed to some pages like CYP2C9, CYP2C19, CYP4F2, Androgen backdoor pathway, 21-Hydroxylase, Late onset congenital adrenal hyperplasia, 11-Deoxycortisol, Androgen backdoor pathway, Steroid 11β-hydroxylase, etc. Thank you! I’ve been a member for a little over a year I think. I’ve been active on some pages that have pending changes due to increased page protection due to excessive vandalism by anonymous editors. I watch a few high-edit-volume pages that have pending changes protection, and I pretty commonly notice a bit of a delay in accepting or rejecting revisions at these pages, which suggests that more pending changes reviewers would be useful there. The major example is Politics (as I write this there is a review pending here), and another major example is Capitalism. I have very strong knowledge of WP:BLP policy from writing hundreds of BLPs, which has given me a solid background in preventing WP:ATTACKs and WP:Libel as I've helped protect a number of high-visibility BLPs (probably my best sustained BLP protection efforts over the course of months/years have been at Jon Lovett, Tara McGowan, and Sarah Cooper; I also do plenty of non-BLP vandalism prevention, for example at political party). I also have a solid grounding in Wikipedia's copyright policies, both from trying to make sure that photographs added to pages I write are acceptable, and from very regularly encountering copied text (I even caught some plagiarism on the portuguese wikipedia once!). Hello. First of all, I'd like to say that I don't mean to misuse it in any way. I know that back in May I used rollback in an edit war, and because of that and some violations of WP:EWLO earlier on, I had it and another right revoked. Ever since then, I've cautiously reverted vandalism. I have also collected fifteen times the amount of mainspace edits needed to get rollback, but my track record of editing has made me fine with Twinkle. That is, until yesterday, when HurricaneTracker495 expressed their wanting for me to request rollback.

A note: L235, if you are reviewing this, then review my contributions and my talk page archives, and see how much I've improved.

Thanks, 🐔 Chicdat Bawk to me! 12:03, 22 November 2020 (UTC)

Request withdrawn 🐔 Chicdat Bawk to me! 11:08, 23 November 2020 (UTC)
Chicdat I just had a skim through your last month or so of editing. I'm seeing a lot of editing about hurricanes, but I'm not seeing much in the way of counter vandalism work that would demonstrate a need for the rollback tool. That's not to say that I think you would misuse it, I'm just not sure that you need it - you've got Twinkle to revert occasional vandalism you might come across in your regular editing. Are you intending to jump into using Huggle or similar if given the permission? GirthSummit (blether) 12:23, 22 November 2020 (UTC)
No, I'm not going to go into Huggle. There are enough users who do that already. In truth, my primary reason for requesting was the request on my talk page. I guess all that I really even need for what I do in counter-vandalism is Twinkle. 🐔 Chicdat Bawk to me! 12:27, 22 November 2020 (UTC)
OK, well I'm not opposed to the idea of your having rollback, but I'd want to see a bit more demonstration of your understanding of countervandalism ops in your contribs - doing a bit of RCP for a few days using Twinkle would be sufficient, just so we can see that you know when to leave an edit summary and when rollback could be used. (To be honest though, I very rarely use it myself - Twinkle provides tools which do almost everything that rollback allows, there are just a few specific circumstances where rollback is more useful.) Cheers GirthSummit (blether) 13:45, 22 November 2020 (UTC)
I’m the user who suggested chicdat have rollback. I am ok with it if it’s placed on hold, but not if declined and later regranted. Chicdat take the next 24 hours to do anti vandalism fighting and show when rollback is useful and when it’s not. HurricaneTracker495 (talk) 14:16, 22 November 2020 (UTC)
Chicdat: I can tell you've been doing good work, and at a glance I see that you've been a lot more careful than you were when we first spoke earlier this year. Cabayi's advice here is still probably the best course of action to take. Now, I don't have objections per se to a grant of rollback, but it actually reflects much better on you if you request only the rights that you know you want to use – it can be flattering and a sign of trust that someone else thinks you should get a right, but you shouldn't actually request it unless you think you're going to use it. Good luck, KevinL (aka L235 · t · c) 21:20, 22 November 2020 (UTC)
@Chicdat: I agree with L235. Please download Huggle if approved or promise to use the right or you may be declined, which I don't want to see happen. --HurricaneTracker495 (talk) 23:08, 22 November 2020 (UTC)--HurricaneTracker495 (talk) 23:08, 22 November 2020 (UTC)
@HurricaneTracker495: The last time I had rollback, I tried to download Huggle – sixteen times. The computer I used was a mess. I think downloading Huggle this time will be much the same, and I don't want to waste a user right like that. It's like an admin who pretends he's not one and doesn't use his tools. I withdraw my request. 🐔 Chicdat Bawk to me! 11:03, 23 November 2020 (UTC)

  • Captain Medusa's comment notwithstanding, I support Flalf's application. They might not be the most prolific patroller on the project, but they have completed the CVU course successfully, including the section on Rollback, and I trust them not to abuse it. I want this permission only to revert obvious vandalism and edits that absolutely need to be revert, I think of this right more faster than Twinkle and of if may be for probation.
